The fitness area has taken off with people wanting a Personal Trainer. People find they need that support, that push, that training to get to where they want to physically be.
The same can be with people spiritually. I created and admin one of the largest Christian Facebook groups called Aussie Christians on Facebook and we are hitting the 4000 member mark. We have boundaries in place, so we only accept Christians and only Aussies, otherwise the group will just grow out. Most of those people attend or are connected with a Church, but quite a lot don’t go to Church anymore for one reason or another. A question on the group was – “who wants to be mentored?” We got a good response.
I’ve found people want that personal trainer, but not in the fitness area, but in the spiritual area. They want discipling and mentoring, to know that they are on the right track.
When choosing people to mentor, you need to know that they are serious. You need to know that they are going to accept what you give them and they won’t be offended by what you say to them. Pray and ask God if you are meant to mentor them, as no one wants to waste time, when God wants you doing something else.
One thing I’ve asked in the past is “Write me a letter, stating why you want to be mentored” and this has helped in the decision process.
Here’s an example of a form that I had, to go with it.
Here it is in the format you can copy. Change it and make it adaptable to your circumstances.
