Communication

Communication IS an important tool both in and out of the Church body. God used it. Jesus used it. Holy Spirit used it and all 3 still use it. Communication involves more than one person. It’s not an ‘I’ thing. It’s a ‘team’ and that’s what leaders are. They are a team, working together to make their Church function to the best it can be.

We live in a culture where a majority of people have a ‘NEED TO KNOW’ culture. In the old days, people spread things by word of mouth and got excited about reading a newspaper and finding out all that was going on in the world. Now we can spread a message across the whole world within seconds.

Why communicate?

So everyone is on the same page.
So everyone knows what is going on.

Communication is where every leader needs to communicate and every staff member needs to communicate, so that the net of communication keeps strong and keeps information flowing. Unfortunately when a leader doesn’t communicate or share information needed to a staff member, it creates break down in the ‘net’ and causes friction. I have come into this situation and it caused friction and particular leader held tight onto the event that they were running, not sharing the information with admin, so this caused friction and breakdown within the team. This then became a ‘their event’ not a team event.

Important points to communicate:-

  • What the Church believes
  • When are events/meetings happening (with all the information)
  • Where the Church is heading (vision)
  • What’s happening behind the scenes

Today, we have the thrilling internet that spreads news and information in an instance and this is what our current generation thrives on and expects. It’s important to keep information ‘fresh’ and ‘moving’.

TIPS IN THE BIBLE ON COMMUNICATION

~Quick to hear and slow to speak (James 1:19) – Not only with one another, but with the Holy Spirit as well.
~Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt. (Colossians 4:6)

Ways a Church can communicate are:-

Text messaging, phone calls and visits. I have never felt so disconnected when I moved from a Church that is always connecting this way with their congregation, to a Church that doesn’t. It is encouraging to have someone take the time out to spend time with you. Send a simple encouragement, even to your leaders, and let them know how important they are to you. Thank those who helped in the morning service or even those who stand alongside you in prayer.

Sending out e-newsletters, as long as they are kept short and simple. Have links so people can click on if they require more information. Most people are busy and don’t have time to read, so they just skim.

Create a closed Facebook group for Church Members only that people can post information that only Church members need to know such as prayer requests and a place where members feel safe enough to ask questions. Even a worship team group, leaders only group etc are great ways to make sure everyone gets connected and gets updates on things that are happening.

– Letters are a dying thing, but the ‘mature’ members still love to receive cards and notes in the mail, especially ‘Get Well’ cards.

Newsletters…well…..I have mixed reactions on this one, but it does depend on the Church size and people. Sometimes they work and other times they don’t. I’ll let you decide on this one.

– Have a Church App. Most people have smart phones these days. There are some great apps available to Churches that can have information about anything to do with your church. For example, sermon notes, prayer requests, events, podcasts, videos, online tithing…anything goes these days when it comes to apps.

Webpages are where visitors come to find out all about your Church. Members usually visit the Church website to get event details or listen to a sermon. It’s important to keep these updated (and I know it can be hard).

– Have a Facebook page for the Church (not a profile, as this is against Facebook terms). Create events through this page (encouraging members to easily add friends to this event, to help spread the word).

One of our dominant ways of communicating, in our current times, is the through the internet, Social Media (one of my favourite topics to speak on). Yes it has its bad points, but there are so many great points to using it, especially for a Church! Check out my Social Media posts!

  • If leaders are contacting younger members, say under 16, by phone, it would be best if they ring their parents FIRST and ask the parents permission if they could speak to their child about……
  • SMS information to all members in the group or to none at all. If someone gets missed out, it can lead to offense.

Social Media for Church Leaders & Staff

Whoever posts on behalf of the Church, pastor or posts as themselves, they must remember that what is seen on their social media reflects them, Christ and it also shows the standard of the media ‘owner’. Everyone who posts is responsible for their posts and must make sure they have a high standard to follow.

A wise step for your leaders and staff is to have some guidelines and training for communication and social media, to keep them and members safe. Put a simple manual together and set staff up with information and guidelines.
For example:-

  • Give each staff member their own Church email address and encourage them to use it for church related work, as this helps them keep boundaries.
  • Don’t give out addresses or phone numbers of any members or staff without permission.
  • Stay away from video chatting one on one with a minor.
  • Chat on social media in groups, not one on one, with minors or those who are vulnerable.
  • Leaders to be an example and not living on their phone all the time while in the position of leader.
  • Don’t use snapchat or any app that can’t store evidence of conversation – for protection of all parties.
  • Be available to reply to questions, queries and quarrels on social media.
  • Create a closed Facebook group for Church Members only that people can post information that only Church members need to know such as prayer requests and a place where members feel safe enough to ask questions. Even a worship team group (for the worship team), leaders only group etc are great ways to make sure everyone gets connected and gets updates on things that are happening.
  • Have a Facebook page for the Church (not a profile, as this is against Facebook terms). Create events through this page (encouraging members to easily add friends to this event, to help spread the word) – NOT through personal Facebook account – as it won’t get extended publicity. Facebook pages posts can be set at a scheduled time to post, which makes it easier for the admin as they don’t have to set their alarm to get on at social media ‘peak’ hours.
  • Get a permission form signed, before posting photos of minors. Some use permission forms for all, to cover all bases. I definitely would if using photos on Church websites.
  • Don’t share any picture off the internet! You must think of ‘copyright’ with images etc and it is so easy to track down images with image recognition programs, so you must be very careful in what images you post. Create your own. There are some great apps out there and programs for designing your own posters.

Apps are in!

Apps are everywhere and there is an app for everything…..well nearly.

If you don’t know what an APP is……you’re probably among the mature generation age, but you probably remember the time the TV came out into society and now realise how that tool has been a strong influence in society, especially with communication. T

his is the same with apps. They come on most smart phones, tablets and now onto computers. Churches have caught on with this social tool and have brought it into their community to make communication easier and causing a relationship that bring generations and positive input together, through technology.

If you are looking for a Church family to join, download their app to learn more about them, their beliefs, and their ministries.

Each app is different, but there is one app that I can highly recommend and is a popular choice – vinteract.com.au

Communicating Safely

MUSIQO

We would be lost without our electronic communication items, but sometimes they can get us into trouble.

Therefore, here are some boundaries that I think are great in protecting people all round.

Send Group Emails.

Social Chat in groups NOT one on one.

Staff communicate through Church email or work email NOT personal email, so evidence is there if need in the future. If you do receive any personal email to do with your position at Church, then forward it onto your Church email address and reply from there.

Contact under 16’s through their home phone or parents mobile and ask the parents permission if it is ok to speak with their child about………

SMS information only to youth. Ring if the SMS turns into a conversation.

Don’t message through Social Media.

Keep writing on Social Media Walls to minimum light message.

Don’t give out any phone numbers or addresses of others without their permission.

Stay away from video chatting, on any device, with a minor.

Social Media

History

Back in June 2011, I created the community group “Aussie Christians on Facebook” group for Australian Christians only. After seeing the increase of isolation and hurting Christians and the potential of Social Media, I created this group to connect and create community in the online world, especially for those in isolation and in remote areas. From this group, Aussie Christian Prayer Warriors, Aussie Christian Jobs and other Facebook groups were birthed. The Aussie Christians group grew beyond 7000 alone and now is run by Liz Duffin, who does an amazing job. I learnt quite a bit about communicating and working with people in Facebook groups, in where you can find my notes below.

Aussie Christians on Facebook Cover Photo

Aussie Christians on Facebook became a safe place.

To become a member of Aussie Christians on Facebook, the admin would check the Facebook profile for evidence of being a Christian and being in Australia. This was to cut out spam and scammers. It also minimised the consistent self-promotion posts, that you often find in Facebook groups. We were there to support one another and sharpen one another.

Facebook Group Guidelines

IMPORTANT….Please Read….

Let’s all unite together across this nation and give God the glory and praise He deserves.

STATEMENT OF FAITH
The Bible is the inspired and only infallible and authoritative written Word of God.
There is one God, creator of all things, eternally existent in three persons, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.
In the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, in his virgin birth, in his sinless life, in his miracles, in his atoning death, in his bodily resurrection and in his ascension to the right hand of the Father.
In the resurrection of both the saved and the lost; the one to everlasting life and the other to everlasting damnation.
In the personal future return of Christ to this earth in power and glory.
The only means of being cleansed from sin is through repentance and faith in the precious blood of Christ and that regeneration by the Holy Spirit is absolutely essential for personal salvation.
In the baptism of the Holy Spirit for all believers who ask and in the present day reality of the operation in the supernatural gifts of the Holy Spirit.
In the power of God to heal the human body in answer to faith and prayer.
In the observance of the ordinances of Christian baptism by immersion for all believers and the Lord’s Supper.

How to keep the community going

Groups are becoming more popular than pages. I suggest if you do want to set up a group for your Church, check out this post here:- https://churchsupportaustralia.com/2015/02/18/social-media/

Here are some general tips for what you can do in your group.
1) Post often of what is happening at Church.
2) Interactive posts and more about how the group/church are impacting this nation.
3) Ask open question posts.
4) Do physical meet ups where you can and post about that.
5) Live videos – not the worship section, unless you have a licence.
6) Have some get to know you questions for members, even new ones, that they can answer and they can copy and paste, answer them and post them into the group.
7) Discussion questions re this weeks sermon etc?
8) Use something like Zoom for online bible study, prayer meeting or home group meetings.
9) Build relationships through messenger, by doing some pastoral care.
10) Live interviews between staff, members, etc.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask. 🙂

Social Media for the Church

Keeping up

social

with the times is a way of keeping up with your congregation. I love social media and would do it for anyone, anytime! Apparently there are Social Media Pastors now!

FOLLOW

People love keeping up to date in what’s happening at their Church, they love seeing photos of their Church family and being invited to events. On the events, it’s a great tool for people to invite their friends that don’t regularly attend church, to events. These event posts can even be shared and that helps spread the word. The events have the ability to be linked to where people can get their tickets from and even show a map.

Most of the time people go on Facebook in the early mornings and in the evenings, so this is a great time to share posts with your Church. Now we have the fantastic ability of scheduling posts, so we don’t need to live on Facebook all the time.

Create a separate Facebook Group that only allows members in, so they feel safe and secure amongst the Church family. In this group, prayer requests, announcements, forms published etc can be shared amoung Church family only.

So what can you post on your Church Facebook page? Here’s some ideas:-

Church

ALSO….

– Youtube link of the song you are learning at Church (get them familiar with the song)

– Quotes from leaders in your Church

– Crowd shots (from the rear to cover privacy)

– People on stage shots

– Volunteers that work behind the scenes, so people know who does what and even include a bit of their story

– Testimonies- maybe a short video- these are powerful

IMPORTANT

DON’T PHOTOGRAPH KIDS WITHOUT PARENTS PERMISSION…….so many families are involved in the court system and you don’t know every child’s situation, so you need to protect them or have a consent form signed by the parents.
